ST. JOSEPH - All geared up for a New Year's Day excursion with no place to go in the Twin Cities?

Van Buren State Park, 23960 Ruggles Road, just south of South Haven is participating in Shoe Year's Day, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' program put on in nine state parks as part of the nationwide First Day Hikes effort.

The park is offering a snowshoe hike, guided by park staff through dunes and along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Meet at 1 p.m. at the main parking lot.

The event is free, and snowshoes will be provided.

First Day at Indiana Dunes

If you live in the south end of Berrien County or feel like going for a longer drive, Indiana Dunes State Park, just north of Chesterton, Ind., is offering a morning First Day hike. While guiding hikers on a one-hour jaunt, Assistant Property Manager Doug Stukey is to discuss recent state park projects and ice shelf formation along Lake Michigan.

Participants should meet at the nature center, 1600 N. 25 E., Chesterton, at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time.
