Demolition of Snowflake motel beginsSTEVENSVILLE — The Snowflake Motel, possibly designed by America's foremost architect, met the wrecking ball Monday.Eau Claire contractor Ron "Skinny" Paustian began demolition work Monday at the site along Red Arrow Highway near Lincoln Township's northern edge.Historic preservationists wanted to save the building, which some people argue was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the mid '50s. He died in 1959. Others argue it was designed about five years later by Wright's son-in-law, William Wesley Peters, who had been a draftsman for the famed architect. He died in 1991.The Snowflake was built as a luxury motel in the early '60s for owners Sahag and Christina Sarkisian. Lincoln Township officials said Richard Nixon once stayed there. The motel included the once-popular lounge, the Frost Club. The motel changed hands several times and in 1996 became the St. Joseph Inn, which was marketed for long-term residents. The building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, had deteroriated in recent years. Owners GP LLC have not announced what they will do with the land.
