Rick Rasmussen has been working with Amtrak and the Michigan Department of Transportation on behalf of Watervliet's Downtown Development Authority to open an Amtrak stop in downtown Watervliet. Rasmussen said he envisions trains stopping only as passengers call for it.
Watervliet used to be a regular stop for the Pere Marquette Railway, which established the line running along Lake Michigan in Berrien County before turning east toward Coloma and Watervliet. The Watervliet station is pictured in the early 1900s.

WATERVLIET - Amtrak officials are apparently open to the idea of adding occasional stops in Watervliet on the Pere Marquette line that runs between Grand Rapids and Chicago.
Area resident Rick Rasmussen has been working with Amtrak and the Michigan Department of Transportation over the past month on behalf of the city's Downtown Development Authority. He updated the City Commission on Tuesday night and offered encouraging news.
