U.S. Rep. Fred Upton supports Medicare's structure for current beneficiaries but is not committing to the program's future as a single-payer system, a campaign spokesman says.
"Fred Upton is working to preserve and strengthen Medicare for Southwest Michigan seniors because they depend on it," campaign manager Joe Wicks said in an email response to a Herald-Palladium inquiry. "Fred has consistently opposed reducing benefits for current beneficiaries and voted against the Obama-Pelosi government takeover of health care that cut Medicare by $700 billion." He was referring the Affordable Care Act.
