GOP delivers 1-2 punch to LGBT community
Posted: December 12, 2014 - 5:00 am

If you're a gay person in Michigan and your boss has religious objections, he can fire you. If that boss even thinks you're gay, he can fire you. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Michigan are not protected against discrimination the way other people are. Last week in the Michigan State House, a proposed revision to fix this injustice by including LGBT people in the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1976 died in committee. (Elliott-Larsen prohibits discrimination based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status.) The majority party in a House committee would not add transgender-status protection to Elliott-Larsen, and the LGB community and their allies showed true courage and character by standing in solidarity with transgender people; they wouldn't leave transgender people unprotected. So the house committee left them all unprotected.
