Officials are recommending residents filter, then boil their drinking water after a failure at the Benton Harbor Water Filtration Plant.

BENTON HARBOR — Benton Harbor residents will need to filter, then boil their drinking water for at least two to three days due to a failure at the city’s water treatment plant.

State officials were notified Thursday afternoon that there was a chemical feed interruption in the treatment process for two hours, meaning that bacterial contamination may have occurred, said Ernie Sarkipato, an engineering specialist with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. He spoke Friday during a Facebook Live news conference on the Berrien County Health Department Facebook page.
