BENTON HARBOR — When Roy Barry was a kid growing up in Kalamazoo, he hated riding the school bus.

“We lost everything in a house fire, and we were just trying to get by,” he said. “The most terrifying thing was the school bus. It was a nightmare. You get called all kinds of names. So me and my sisters walked miles and blocks to school just because we didn’t want to get on the school bus.”
