BENTON HARBOR — A 20-year-old St. Joseph Township man has died after being hit by a vehicle Saturday night in Benton Harbor. Police said it was a hit-and-run, and that an arrest has been made.

Deputy Director Michael Clark from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety identified the man who died as Thomas W. Adams, a 2018 graduate of Berrien Springs High School. He lived in St. Joseph Township, Clark said in a news release.

Police said it happened just before midnight in the 1200 block of Colfax Avenue. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene but has since been located and arrested, Clark said.

Berrien County Prosecutor Michael Sepic said Lamerrius Glass, 35, of Benton Harbor is being held in the Berrien County jail and faces charges of reckless driving causing death and failure to stop at the scene of a crash causing death. Both are 15-year felonies. Sepic said he expects Glass to be arraigned today.

Clark said police were called Saturday on a report of a hit and run involving a car and a pedestrian when they found Adams with significant injuries. He was taken to Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph, then transferred to a Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he died.

Friends and family are grieving the loss of Adams online. A GoFundMe account has been set up in his name, to benefit his girlfriend and two daughters, according to the fund’s main page.

“Thomas was an extraordinary person! He had a heart of gold and a smile a mile wide! He was extremely intelligent, very athletic, tons of fun, patient, kind, compassionate, and loyal to everyone he cared for, whether you were one of his best friends, a teammate, or his teacher!” according to the post. “He grew fiercely loyal and most responsible when he became a father – providing for ALL his family’s needs without a single complaint. They were his entire world!”

Adams was a well-known athlete for the Shamrocks, having earned all-conference honors in football in 2017.

Benton Harbor Public Safety officers were assisted by Michigan State Police with accident scene reconstruction. The investigation continued overnight into early Sunday morning and the suspect and his vehicle were found.

Glass was interviewed, arrested and taken to jail, and the vehicle was impounded pending further investigation.
