Christopher Burrows of South Haven flew his drone to capture images of the line of downed trees in Covert Township that occurred when a thunderstorm carrying wind speeds of up to 95 mph tore through the area near Blue Star Highway.

COVERT — National Weather Service meteorologists are still determining whether a severe thunderstorm that ripped through sections of northwest Berrien County and Van Buren County on June 26 was the result of straight-line winds or perhaps a tornado.

After an initial review of damage caused by the storm, the National Weather Service’s Grand Rapids office stated on Tuesday, “Most of it is straight-line winds.” However, on Thursday a spokesperson for the Grand Rapids office stated the damage survey is not yet complete.
