SOUTH HAVEN — Two foundations are playing a large role in helping the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy to create a new nature preserve in South Haven Township.

The Carls Foundation and the J.A. Woollam Foundation have awarded a $125,000 challenge grant to help the conservancy raise the remainder of the funds it needs to protect and create Porter Legacy Dunes nature preserve, overlooking Lake Michigan. So far the conservancy has raised approximately $105,000 of the $125,000 goal, but must raise the final $20,000 by Aug. 31 to receive the full grant amount, according to the conservancy President and Executive Director Pete Ter Louw.
