ST. JOSEPH — Tom Stanton remembers the first time he heard the name Black Legion.

“My aunts and uncles would come to my folks’ house in the suburbs for the holidays reminiscing about their childhoods,” Stanton says by phone from his home in New Baltimore, Mich. “This was the early ’70s, I was a big sports fan, and the Detroit teams were pretty lousy. So I was so envious because they would talk about when the Tigers, Lions and Red Wings all won titles within seven months of each other in 1935 and ’36 at the same time Joe Louis was the undefeated, uncrowned boxing champion. It just seemed like such a glorious time.”
