Each May, we celebrate Older Americans Month. This year’s theme, “Make Your Mark,” is apt for our times.

Older Americans Month was first celebrated in 1965, after the federal Older Americans Act (OAA) was signed into law. The OAA set the foundation for a national network of local Area Agencies on Aging to plan and develop a network of services to help older adults live independently in their communities.

Christine Vanlandingham is chief operating officer of Region IV Area Agency on Aging in Southwest Michigan. Questions on age or independence services? Call the Info-Line for Aging & Disability at 800-654-2810 or visit www.areaagencyonaging.org. The Generations column appears each Saturday in The Herald-Palladium.
