THREE OAKS — Members of the Rebecca Dewey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently recognized five students who had qualified for the DAR Good Citizen award program.
A reception was held at Three Oaks United Methodist Church for the students.
The 2019 Good Citizens are: Jessie Rose Rieth, River Valley High School; Alexandra Ziebarth, Niles High School; Maya Schuhknecht, Buchanan High School; Maxwell Robert Folino, New Buffalo High School; and Reagan M. Smith, Bridgman High School.
Each student received a check.
Rieth was chosen as the top winner, and her essay will go on to the state DAR competition.
The DAR Good Citizen program seeks to recognize outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools and communities.
The program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
It is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by their state board of education.
Each school may honor one senior per year.
The students selected as their schools’ Good Citizens have the following traits: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
Seniors are given a topic to write about for a patriotic essay.
