Lakeland to host free wellness event at Elite Barbershop

BENTON HARBOR — The public is invited to a neighborhood-centered health home event from 2-6 p.m. Thursday at Elite Barbershop, 1301 Pipestone Road.

Free blood pressure screenings will be offered, and a clinical educator will be on-site for personal health coaching sessions.

Attendees can meet with a Lakeland resident physician, and participate in a discussion about key medical topics.

Walk-ins will be welcomed.

Free pre-diabetes class planned in Niles

NILES — Spectrum Health Lakeland will host a free program designed to help anyone with higher-than-normal blood sugar levels learn about lifestyle changes that may help them avoid or delay the onset of diabetes.

The class will be from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday in the Buchanan Health Resource Library at Lakeland Hospital, Niles, 31 N. St. Joseph Ave.

During the first hour, a registered nurse will guide attendees through the disease process of diabetes and introduce healthy lifestyle changes. The final hour will be spent with a registered dietitian, who will suggest meal selections that can help attendees maintain health and manage weight.

The program does not require a physician referral.

Registration is required as class size is limited.

Bariatric surgeons to discuss weight loss options at seminars

The Lakeland Weight Loss Center will host a pair of free seminars, “Lose Weight ... Find Health,” this month.

The first seminar will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday in the community room at Caring Circle, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph.

The second seminar will be from 6:30-8 p.m. July 17 in the community conference room at Lakeland Medical Suites, 41 N. St. Joseph Ave., Niles.

Bariatric surgeons Michael Schuhknecht and Seth Miller will discuss programs available for losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight.

The Lakeland Weight Loss Center works with each patient to create a customized lifestyle plan through bariatric surgery, diet and nutrition counseling, and monthly support groups.

Library introduces checkout kits

STEVENSVILLE — Lincoln Township Public Library, 2099 W. John Beers Road, will introduce its new checkout kits for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients during adult story time at 10:30 a.m. July 12.

The story time will include reading and discussion from books created for adults with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Aging Mastery program continues Tuesday in St. Joe

ST. JOSEPH — The Region IV Area Agency on Aging will continue its Aging Mastery classes Tuesday with Memory Matters.

The class will be interactive, highlighting normal age-related memory changes and teaching basic skills to aid memory.

The guest speaker will be a speech and language pathologist from Spectrum Health Lakeland.

The class will be from 9-10:30 a.m. at the AAA’s Campus for Creative Aging, 2920 Lakeview Ave.

The fee for the class is $10.
