I had thought dude ranches – the places out west you’d visit to spend time galloping across the plains or desert with a background of mountain ranches – were from the past.

Popular around the time of Theodore Roosevelt, who loved to ride horses and hunt, dude ranches became popular in the 1880s, shortly after the Battle of Little Bighorn. They attracted people from America and also Europe.
