March’s drama of the Ever Given getting stuck in the Suez Canal brought to mind the time in October 1952 when the large passenger steamer SS City of Grand Rapids slipped her moorings along Silver Beach and briefly blocked the St. Joseph River channel. It was a final curtain call for the old girl, as soon after she was towed to the scrapyard – the last of the old Graham & Morton steamers to be scrapped – marking an end to a long-ago era when steamers ruled the lakes. Retired St. Joseph city employee Mike Genovese first noted the comparison on Facebook.

If you’re a fan of information in list form, this is the most wonderful time of the year.

As the calendar flips from one year to the next, people often will look back on the past year. Maybe it’s to assess what went right and wrong with their business. Maybe it’s to formulate a list of New Year’s resolutions. Or maybe it’s to create a top 10 list of important information.
