SOUTH HAVEN — A Bangor man’s bond was set at $1 million Wednesday in connection with his son’s 2017 overdose death.
Gary Birkhead, 48, appeared in South Haven District Court on charges of homicide/involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse, both felonies, related to the death of his son, Cole Birkhead.
Cole, 16, of Hartford died of a drug overdose Aug. 13, 2017, at Bronson Hospital Kalamazoo, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police.
State police Det. Sgt. Scott Ernstes said the investigation is still ongoing. The Van Buren County Prosecutor’s office issued the charges last Friday and Birkhead was arrested Tuesday.
He would give no information on the investigation itself, such as what drug was involved, but said, “after an extensive investigation, the prosecutor’s office felt the facts warranted those charges.”
According to Cole’s obituary, he enjoyed the outdoors and playing a variety of sports, including football, basketball and baseball.
Birkhead is set to next appear in court for a probable cause hearing at 1 p.m. April 3 and for a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. April 10.
He remains in the Van Buren County Jail.
