HARTFORD — A Benton Harbor man was arraigned Tuesday in relation to a crash that killed two people along Red Arrow Highway in Hartford Township earlier this month.
Jose Humberto Canedo, 23, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for failing to appear for a show cause hearing on an original charge of operating while intoxicated, from a Jan. 12 car crash. Following his arraignment, Canedo was released on a cash surety bond of $500,000.
Police said the traffic crash investigation will be forwarded to the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office for possible criminal charges.
According to a news release from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, Canedo was driving a 2007 Chevy Equinox along Red Arrow Highway on Jan. 12 when he allegedly crossed the center line and hit a 2007 Jeep Cherokee that was traveling westbound.
Following an initial investigation, Van Buren deputies said alcohol was believed to be a factor in the two-car crash.
The names of the other driver and passengers in both vehicles were also released Tuesday.
Riding in the Chevy Equinox with Canedo was 6-year-old Skylinn Sirenne Salinas and 1-year-old Jesse James Canedo.
Skylinn was one of two people killed in the head-on collision. Also killed in the crash was 73-year-old Mary Ann Fender of Paw Paw. Fender was the driver of the Jeep Cherokee.
The passenger in the Jeep Cherokee was 56-year-old Janet Carol Campbell of Paw Paw.
