ST. JOSEPH — Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey is asking the county board of commissioners to consider placing a tax increase request on the August ballot to pay for five additional officers he says are necessary to fight crime.

Bailey, along with Undersheriff Chuck Heit, on Thursday presented to the administration committee a proposal for an increase in the public safety millage from 0.35 to 0.45 mills, generating an additional $804,000 a year. It would be the first increase since the millage was enacted in 1984, Bailey said. The current millage expires at the end of the year.
