DOWAGIAC — A man who was confronted by police after they saw him riding a bicycle at night with no lights or reflective clothing turned out to be wanted on several warrants.
The 31-year-old man from Dowagiac was taken to the Cass County jail on four warrants and a charge of possession of methamphetamine. His name is being withheld pending arraignment in Cass County 4th District Court.
Public Safety Director Steven Grinnewald said police first spotted the man just after midnight Saturday riding a bicycle in the middle/left turn lane on M-51 South near Lyle Drive. The man was riding north on M-51 South and turned in to the parking lot of the Family Fare grocery store. An officer made contact with the bike rider and recognized him as someone he had previously dealt with.
After discovering warrants and arresting the man, a K-9 unit was called and alerted police to the possible presence of narcotics in the man’s backpack. Police searched the bag and said they found suspected meth and several pipes and other paraphernalia.
