COLOMA — The Coloma Township Police Department’s lieutenant will now serve as chief.
Township Supervisor Ken Parrigin announced the appointment of Wes Smigielski to the role, at least temporarily, at Wednesday’s Township Board meeting.
“We’re going to give him a chance to prove himself for the next, I’d say, maybe six months or so,” he said. “Hopefully it turns out well.”
Former Chief Jason Roe announced his retirement last month after 17 years with the department and three years as chief.
Smigielski has been a full-time officer with Coloma Township for four years. Before that, he spent some time as a part-time officer for the department and he served as a detective in Benton Harbor.
In other business, Caleigh Dahn, who is creating the Amicus Dog Park at Washington School Park for her Girl Scout Gold Award Project, told the Township Board her plan to raise the other $3,000 needed for the park.
She will hold a vendor show Feb. 2 at the Coloma Fraternal Order of Police Lodge. She said she plans to get the park done in the spring one way or another.
