County hopes to secure funds for 1839 Courthouse Square

The 1839 Courthouse, oldest in the state, is pictured in 2010. It is part of a small complex of buildings in Berrien Springs known as the History Center at Courthouse Square. County officials are considering making it a part of the county parks system in order to provide secure funding.

ST. JOSEPH - The 1839 Courthouse Square in Berrien Springs would be incorporated into Berrien County's park system under a proposal now under review.

The county appropriates $101,000 a year from the general fund for the historical buildings and related programs, which are conducted by the Berrien County Historical Association.
