Death of baby called suspicious

COLOMA — Police are investigating what they are calling a suspicious death of an infant in Coloma Township.

Berrien County Undersheriff Chuck Heit said deputies responded, along with an ambulance crew, about 9:50 a.m. Monday to a call about a medical emergency involving a 2-month-old baby. Officers arriving at 5100 Little Paw Paw Lake Road in the Ravine-View Estates found the incident to be suspicious in nature and detectives were called to help with an investigation, Heit said.

The child was taken by Pride Care ambulance to Lakeland Hospital Watervliet, and later transfered to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. The baby died there at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Heit said.

An autopsy Wednesday at Western Michigan University School of Medicine proved inconclusive, Heit said, and more medical tests will need to be taken.

Heit said the investigation is ongoing and no other details will be provided at this time.
