COVERT — A 75-year-old Covert Township man died Friday morning after a fire broke out in his mobile home. Misuse of a propane heater is the suspected cause.

Emergency responders arrived at the home at 29260 76th St. at 6:50 a.m. after a motorist passing by called 911, said Doug Myers, Covert Township Fire Chief.

“When we got there the fire was almost fully involved,” Myers said. Firefighters extinguished the flames and discovered the victim, Jerry Lee Rawson, lying on the ground outside a window.

Covert Township Police believe that Rawson, who owned the single-wide mobile home, had managed to crawl out of the residence through a window. Emergency personnel began CPR and transported Rawson to Bronson South Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are waiting for an autopsy to be completed to determine the cause of death, Covert Police Chief Jay Allen said.

The fire’s cause is undetermined, but investigators said misuse of a portable propane heater likely caused the blaze.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department, Pokagon Tribal Police, Michigan State Police and South Haven Area Emergency Services, assisted at the scene.
