BARODA — Three people were taken to the hospital Tuesday night after a two-vehicle crash at Shawnee and Hills roads south of Baroda.
Baroda-Lake Township Police Chief Shawn Martin said Tyler Fye, 23, of Bridgman was released after treatment at Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph, for minor injuries. Douglas Deau, 47, of Galien and Todd Ponegalek, 53, of Three Oaks still were being treated when police left the hospital, Martin said. Lakeland does not release patient condition information to the media.
Martin said Deau was traveling south on Hills Road at about 10:20 p.m. when he disregarded a stop sign and crashed into the vehicle driven by Fye, who was traveling west on Shawnee and had the right-of-way. Fye told police the other vehicle slowed, but did not stop, before pulling into his path.
Fye was alone in his vehicle, a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer, and Ponegalek was a passenger in Deau’s vehicle, a 1987 BMW, Martin said.
Baroda-Lake Township Police were assisted at the scene by the Lake Township Fire Department, Baroda Township Fire Department, Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police and an accident reconstruction team from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
Deau and Ponegalek were both trapped in their vehicle and had to be freed by firefighters from Lake Township using extrication equipment. The injured were taken to the hospital by Medic 1.
Martin said the crash remains under investigation.
