Water safety training on North Pier
ST. JOSEPH — The St. Joseph Department of Public Safety and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department will host a joint water safety event on the North Pier at Tiscornia Beach at noon Sunday. The presentation will cover water safety, pier safety, rip currents and life rings.
Participants will learn how to properly throw a life ring and how to safely remove a person from the water during a water emergency.
Berrien County installed life rings on the South Pier in 2014 and St. Joseph placed them on the North Pier in 2018. Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in children ages 1-4. Nearly 750 people have drowned in the Great Lakes since tracking began in 2010.
