STEVENSVILLE — Hotel developer Michael Patel is planning to put his stamp on Lincoln Township this year.
Township officials have approved the site plans for a Tru by Hilton hotel to be built in the 2600 block of Marquette Woods Road – down the road from two other hotels and Cracker Barrel.
The hotel will be four stories tall at a height of 48 feet. The 48,000-square-foot hotel will have 98 rooms and 100 parking spaces.
Patel said he’s been interested in building a hotel in that location for three years, adding that he likes the Stevensville corridor off of I-94 because it’s “the main entrance into St. Joseph.”
“It’s a brand new prototype from Hilton,” he said in a phone interview Tuesday. “It’s geared toward the millennials. Can’t wait to get started.”
When the hotel is operational, Patel said it will have about 25 employees.
Building Inspector Jim Pheifer said the hotel site plans were submitted toward the end of 2018.
Pheifer said the layout is unique. The main floor will only have five guest rooms, and include the reception area, laundry room, weight and pool area and main office.
With the building permit finalized Tuesday, Pheifer also presented the hotel’s site plans to the township’s Planning Commission at Monday’s meeting.
No action was needed, but Pheifer said he makes it a habit of showing site plans to planners.
“I present it to them so they know what’s going on,” he said. “There’s nothing the board needed to review. We do the site plan review by staff.”
Pheifer said the property is already zoned highway commercial, and workers have already begun to install footers and the hotel’s foundation.
“As soon as the weather breaks, they’ll be ready to go,” Pheifer said.
Patel is no stranger to the hotel industry in Southwest Michigan.
He was developer of the Comfort Inn & Suites of Stevensville, and also responsible for the Hilton Garden Inn in Benton Township, plus the Fairfield Inn & Suites on Red Arrow Highway in Stevensville.
Most recently, Patel began work on a Hampton Inn and Suites near the Home Depot in Benton Township, just off I-94.
The structure will be based off the new prototype of Hampton’s line of hotels. It will be Michigan’s first iteration of the new line of Hamptons.
