DOWAGIAC — Three people escaped uninjured after being trapped in their vehicle when a utility pole with live wires fell on it.

The driver of another vehicle that had hit the pole was arrested.

Police did not release the names of the people involved, but said a pickup truck had stopped for traffic at the intersection of North Paul Street and Marion Street in Dowagiac, waiting to make a left turn, when another vehicle behind it was unable to stop and veered right, hitting the power pole. The pole snapped and collapsed onto the pickup truck, according to Sgt. David Davis of the Dowagiac Police Department.

He said the accident happened around 4 p.m. Saturday. City of Dowagiac Public Services electric crews were called and helped make the scene safe and the occupants, all from Dowagiac, were helped from the truck.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 30-year-old Decatur man, was also uninjured but was arrested on misdemeanor traffic offenses and was taken to the Cass County jail.

Dowagiac police and fire departments were assisted by Pride Care EMS and the Wayne Township Fire Department.
