Fine-free frenzy

Coloma Public Library Director Mary Harrison checks in books Friday afternoon at the Coloma Public Library. Harrison supports the idea of not charging people for overdue library books, but says their two-week grace period, then 5 cents a day fine after that, is one of the smallest fines in the area.

As the saying goes, just because you’ve always done something a certain way, doesn’t mean it makes sense to keep doing it.

“Sometimes you have to step back and analyze what you’ve been doing and ask, ‘Is this a good idea?’” said Dan Hutchins, director of the Van Buren District Library (VBDL).

Fine-free frenzy

Mary Harrison uses a scanner to check in books at the Coloma library. Fines for overdue library books may soon become a thing of the past. The Van Buren District Library went fine-free in November and the Buchanan District Library did the same in October. Several other local libraries are considering the idea.
