DOWAGIAC — Dowagiac police have identified several suspects involved in Monday’s shooting outside Ameriwood Industries.

Charges have been filed by the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office against a 20-year-old South Bend, Ind. native, though no name has been released, according to a news release from Dowagiac police and the Cass County Prosecutor’s office.

Among the charges the suspect faces includes conspiracy to commit robbery, armed robbery, car jacking, conspiracy to commit carjacking, conspiracy to commit unarmed robbery, unarmed robbery and felony firearm.

Police allege that several people from South Bend traveled to Dowagiac in a stolen Lexus SUV, then robbed a 21-year-old Hartford man of marijuana, packaging materials and his vehicle.

The victim was shot several times and was treated for his wounds. He was released from the hospital Wednesday evening.

Dowagiac police alerted other law enforcement agencies in Michigan and Indiana as the investigation unfolded. Dowagiac police were contacted by the Nappanee (Indiana) Police Department, which had been involved in a vehicle pursuit of a Lexus SUV early Tuesday morning and had taken three occupants into custody.

Officers learned the Lexus had been stolen from an auto repair business in Mishawaka, Ind.

The charged suspect is being held in the Elkhart County Jail and is awaiting extradition proceedings to Michigan. Officers also are requesting charges against the driver of the vehicle, a 38-year-old woman from South Bend.

She is being held in the Elkhart County Jail and will also face extradition proceedings.

The incident remains under investigation by Dowagiac police.
