SOUTH HAVEN — Ever wondered where the largest freshwater portable mermaid tank is located?
Wonder no more, says Brian deBest, owner of South Haven businesses deBest Landscaping and Lake Arvesta Farms.
He said he was told that the 7,800-gallon tank he designed and built is the largest one of its kind in North America.
Visitors to South Haven’s 28th Annual HarborFest and Mermaid MegaFest could view mermaids frolicking in the tank during most of the festival this past weekend.
Rosalie Plechaty, part of the Mermaid MegaFest team, said she was happy that deBest was willing to share his tank for the festival. His tank was one of two tanks at the festival. The second one was brought from Washington, D.C., by the Circus Siren Pod.
Saturday night, mermaids swimming in the tank were expected to be featured during the Island Moon Party on Siren’s Island at Lake Arvesta Farms. It was billed as “a magical evening for mermaids and pirates alike.”
After the festival, deBest plans to make the tank available for renting. Constructed of two-inch Lexicon glass, the tank also has a heat and filtration system.
“We started building this about a month ago,” he said. “The glass came out of Chicago and because it cannot be cut or drilled, a Detroit-based business water jetted it to cut openings.”
Steel Center Supply also got in on the build, said deBest, helping to complete the project.
