WATERVLIET — Two former Berrien County school superintendents are in the running for Watervliet Public School’s interim superintendent.
The Watervliet school board will interview John Jarpe and Dave Waaso tonight for the position currently held by Kevin Schooley.
Schooley was selected to lead South Haven Public Schools last month. He starts there Jan. 2.
The board will interview Jarpe at 6:30 p.m. and Waaso at 7:30 p.m. in the high school media center.
Jarpe retired as superintendent of Brandywine Community Schools in 2017, after 10 years in the position. The Niles native taught at Lake Michigan Catholic and Brandywine, including assistant principal, before going to Brown Elementary in St. Joseph to serve as its principal from 1988-2007.
Waaso was most recently interim superintendent at Eau Claire Public Schools. The Three Oaks native taught at Lake Michigan Catholic and Watervliet before going to South Haven to work in a number of capacities, including the central office. He later was superintendent for Mackinac Island schools for seven years.
The interviews are open to the public, but the deliberations will probably be in closed session, according to Jennifer Bailey, the district’s executive secretary.
She said the board will probably not make a decision tonight.
