BENTON TOWNSHIP — One woman was killed and another woman was jailed after a two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning.
It happened at 3:15 a.m. on eastbound I-94 near the 33 mile marker in Benton Township.
In a news release issued Monday, Benton Township police said Erum Nazir, 33, from Oakville, Ontario, Canada, was taken by Medic 1 ambulance to Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph, where she was pronounced dead. She was a passenger in a minivan.
Police said Amber Garton, 32, of Coloma was driving a Ford Mustang that hit the rear of the van. Three other people in the van were not injured, police said. The van had rolled over and Nazir was thrown from the vehicle, police said.
Officers smelled alcohol and performed a field sobriety test on Garton, then took her to Lakeland where her blood alcohol level was determined to be 0.21, more than twice the legal limit for driving, according to the release.
Witnesses told police the woman had been speeding prior to the crash, the release stated. She was jailed on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing death.
Benton Township police were assisted by Berrien County Sheriff’s Department road patrol and accident reconstruction unit and the Benton Township Fire Department.
