1995 – 25 years ago

Divers probing the sunken wreckage of a 19th century schooner off South Haven have gathered more evidence that the ship is the Rockaway, a lumber schooner that was caught in a fierce Lake Michigan gale 94 years ago. According to lake history, the ship sank Nov. 22, 1891, after fighting the gale for 24 hours. While artifacts and data gathered so far support the belief that the schooner is the Rockaway, the divers still are searching for positive proof of the ship’s identity.
