William "Whitey" Myrkle

William "Whitey" Myrkle, 93, of Bangor passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at his home.

William was born June 4, 1925, in Elgin, Il., the son of the late Lawrence and Mary Myrkle and had lived in Bangor since 1957. Whitey graduated from Dowagiac High School in 1943 and attended his graduation in 2013.

He honorably served his country as a member of the US Navy both active and reserve for seven years, serving during WWII. In 1956, Whitey joined the Michigan State Police where he worked as a Motor Carrier Officer until his retirement in 1992. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion Post 160. He was also a member of the Bangor Lions, Michigan Flywheelers, the 2 Cylinder Club and a life member of the Bangor Historical Society.

Surviving are his wife of 20 years Sharon; three children, Greg (Elaine) of Bangor, Gene (Rebecca) of Rincon, Ga., Tina (Craig) Mitchell of Bangor; two step-children, William (Jill) Delor of Uniontown, Pa., Anne (David) Webster of Saugatuck; grandchildren, Andy (Sabrina) Graves of Burton MI, William Gregory Jr of Bangor, Dawn Eisner of Paw Paw, Nichole Myrkle, Kelly Myrkle and Shawn Myrkle all of Rincon, Ga., Melodi Rigozzi of South Haven, Emily Webster of South Dakota, David Webster of Indianapolis, Emily Keith of Pittsburgh and Daniel Keith of Uniontown, Pa.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Kay Myrkle CSM of Alabama; his first wife, Kathryn Myrkle; and three siblings, Larry Myrkle, Phyllis Hemenway and Ralph Myrkle.

The family will meet friends on Monday Feb. 18 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Bangor Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home, www.dlmillerfuneralhome.com. Funeral services will take place 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Bangor Church of Christ. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Bangor Historical Society Building Fund, Bangor Lions Club, Railroad Renegades or Heartland Hospice.
