Wanted: A country I can be proud of

Editor,

A recent writer posed the question of the type country we want. I cannot speak for anyone but myself. I would like a country where we are all treated with respect and where our leader tells me the truth – I believe I can handle the truth.

I would like us all to appreciate the native Americans from whom we took this beautiful country. I would like us all to remember that our west coast once belonged to the Mexican government and we took that – bet they wish they had built a wall. I would like a government that met immigrants with smiles and help instead of cages. I would like us to treat immigrants as our forefathers were, welcomed by the Statue of Liberty and not shunned by any wall. A wall built to keep us safe. With our lack of gun control, we are in more danger than most other advanced countries. Perhaps our president wants the wall to keep us in.

Ayn Rand was quoted: “When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion – when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing – when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors – when you see that men get richer by graft and pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you – when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming self sacrifice – you may know that your society is doomed.” This bit of literature seems to define our current administration and I find it amazing that it was identified so long ago – before Ivanka got China or Jared got position of arms dealer for us or before we even knew the names Popadopolus, Flynn, Cohen, Steele, Stormy Daniels and the assorted felons who have had security clearances given by our president!

So what I want in a country is peace and honesty. I find it difficult to believe this administration deals with either. Tearing up treaties with Russia and Iran, destroying our bonds with allies, receiving gifts from foreign entities and not being able to tell a single truth – what I want is a country and president that I am proud of.

Seminar will increase knowledge of Great Lakes

Editor,

This Valentine’s Day presents a great opportunity to attend a free seminar in South Haven at 6 p.m. in Listiak Auditorium (500 LaGrange St.). The presenters will focus on the ever-changing Great Lakes and the adjoining shorelines – what factors play into those changes and how to plan for the ups and downs of living along the waters/shorelines. How does one plan for the changes? How does a community plan for the future? Arming oneself with knowledge is one way to deal with the present and plan for the future.

This seminar will teach the history of the lakes and shorelines. What a wonderful way to spend Valentine’s Day, learning about one of our greatest assets that continues to enrich and surprise us. Suggested reading ahead of time is “Living with the Lakes” found online at the Army Corps of Engineers (free download). This is a knowledge-gathering seminar, not a debate. Those who may want to attend are planners, zoning officials, landscapers, builders, homeowners, lake visitors or anyone who loves the lake and shoreline. Hoping to see you there.

Medicare-for-all is the only solution

Editor,

I’m so angry right now.

We get our insurance through the marketplace. We very carefully and specifically chose a plan that covered my son’s doctor. He has to go in every three months for a check-up and to maintain his medication. Last year, we noticed an increase in the cost and were told that the provider wasn’t covered (even though they had been before). That’s why we were so careful this year to examine everything. We went with a new plan and checked to make sure everyone and everything was covered.

We took him in at the beginning of the year, and sure enough, we got a bill for $90. My husband called them to say: “Hey, no. We know you cover this, so stop doing that.”

The insurance company’s response? “Well, since it’s for ADHD, the doctor is considered a specialist. You get a higher co-pay, and it’s subject to the deductible.”

Back in December, we talked to the marketplace agents, and they said we should call them and issue an official complaint if we had this problem. We will. I don’t expect anything to actually come of it, though.

But when people don’t understand why I am skeptical of mainstream Democrats, especially in light of the story of Pelosi’s aide trying to soothe insurance company execs that nothing will come of Medicare-for-all, this is why. I will no longer support any candidate who does not explicitly endorse Medicare-for-all. This is breaking the banks for many families, mine included.

We are going to pay at least $3,000 out of pocket, post tax, this year just for health care. That’s barring any sort of emergency or unexpected illness. And we’re expected to do that and thank the insurance company for screwing us over in the process?

Hard Pass.

Late-term abortion is genocide

Editor,

The best ever State of the Union made many women ashamed of the Women in White who have a chance to make a difference yet chose to make women everywhere use foul language.

How can these women sit down and essentially stand up for late-term abortions? Choice is one thing ladies, but we are talking about genocide. With a BA in history and an MA in military history, WWII, I know every detail of the eugenics of pre-holocaust Germany, and this is genocide. I have never seen a closer example to Hitler’s ideology than killing a child who might be ill or unwanted. How can you be against immigration laws if you are pro-eugenics and socialist?

Dems are hypocrites for opposing the wall

Editor,

I have a few questions for any liberal progressive out there who is against building the southern border wall. Would you agree to all of the following?

Would you be willing to remove your own front door with all the locks? Allow anyone and everyone to enter your home, including gang members, terrorists and drug dealers? And, in the very likely event your family members are stolen from, assaulted, raped or killed would you still “keep your door open”? Additionally, would you be willing to pay all the medical bills for these same criminal law violators (and of course all their illegal family members)? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, then please get behind President Trump, who is using a simple common sense approach to keeping your home and our nation safe by building the wall.

Are you aware former President Obama and former candidate Clinton both are on record saying the “wall” is necessary for our nation’s safety and security? You wouldn’t know it given the liberal media’s attempts at painting President Trump as anti-immigrant, when in reality he is pro-legal immigrant just like any of his Democrat predecessors. By the way, please watch pro-American Fox News to get “real” news instead of all this anti-American “fake news” propaganda causing division: CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, AP etc.

Let me finish with some political trivia: Can you guess what surrounds the Obama’s, Clinton’s and just about every wealthy Democrat’s homes? If you answered a “wall,” then you are correct!

Please help stop this insanely hypocritical liberal madness by contacting your Democrat representatives and demand they support the wall in the best interest of all Americans and immigrants alike.
