Annual Newsie Sale

The Herald-Palladium's annual Good Fellow Fund, which raises money to help those in need around the holidays, is continuing in 2021. But the fund's biggest single-day fundraiser – the annual Newsie sale – will not be held this year because of the coronavirus.

We are urging local residents who normally donate during the Newsie sale to instead donate through the form below or by sending a check to our office at 3450 Hollywood Rd., St. Joseph, MI 49085, payable to the Good Fellow Fund.

We are proud of the Good Fellow Fund tradition, which dates back a full century. It was near the end of the first decade of the 20th century when the Chicago Tribune ignited the Good Fellow tradition, when an anonymous man penned a front page letter implored all good fellows of the city to join him in buying Christmas presents for the disadvantaged children of the city. The paper threw its weight behind the effort, which, within days, was picked up by papers across the nation, including The News-Palladium, a forerunner to The Herald-Palladium.

World War I interrupted the local effort, but in 1920 News-Palladium Publisher Stanley R. Banyon renewed the fundraising drive with a front page editorial. Every year since then this paper has conducted the Good Fellow Fund, picking up all overhead costs, to assist families at Christmastime so no child wakes up on Christmas morning without packages to open.

Please, help if you can. No donation is too small.
