BANGOR — Bangor’s volleyball team added another trophy to the high school’s trophy case after winning their own invitational, Saturday, Oct. 24.

Normally, the tournament the Vikings host each year lasts all day, but due to restrictions to slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus, this year’s tournament was limited to four teams per Michigan High School Athletic Association rules, Bangor Coach Doug Jones explained.

Teams that participated included Bangor, Bloomingdale, Climax-Scotts and Delton Kellogg.

From the start of the tournament, the Vikings proved they were the team to beat.

“We were undefeated in pool play by taking two sets each from Bloomingdale, Climax-Scotts and Delton Kellogg,” Jones said.

Bangor then completed its 8-0 sweep by defeating Delton-Kellogg, 2-0 in the championship match.

Olivia Kuiper led the Vikings’ attack with 30 kills, followed closely by Amara Littlefield’s 28 kills. Kuiper also racked up 10 service aces and 26 digs.

On defense, Abby Moench tallied 73 assists and 18 digs, while libero Kaitlyn Kite had 26 digs. Freshman middle blocker Taliyah Modert earned 6 of the team’s 11 solo blocks.

“Overall, it was a well-balanced performance in both offense and defense aided by outstanding serving,” Jones said. “Hats off to Olivia, Alyssa, Abby, Siney, Amara, Cloe, Kaitlyn, Lexy, Taliyah and Aaleeya for winning individual medals and a first-place trophy.
