BRIDGMAN — A closely contested matchup between Lake Michigan Catholic and Bridgman's girls basketball teams came down to a pair of free throws in the game's final seconds.

Trailing by one point with 15 seconds to go, Catholic's Claire LaSata sunk a pair of free throws, then the Bees missed a last-second shot attempt to give the Lakers a 40-39 season-opening win in a Berrien-Cass-St. Joseph Conference cross divisional boys-girls doubleheader played at Bridgman.
