WATERVLIET — Berrien Springs has goals to accomplish this season. One of them is setting records.

The Shamrocks were able to cross that feat off on the girls side, with a new time in the 400-meter relay at the Watervliet Relays on Friday. for at least one team in Friday’s Watervliet relays.

Kyra Reese, Zariya Suggs, Iliana Mun and Zoe Dortch ran their way to a 52.38-second finish, erasing the previous record of 52.24 set by Cassopolis in 1987.

“We had our eyes set on that (record),” Berrien Springs coach Jon Rodriguez said. “We were looking at it last year and it happened.”

Berrien Springs swept the meet winning with scores of 94 (boys) and 96 (girls). Coloma finished second in the boys meet with 64 points. Hopkins and Lawton tied for third with 40 and host Watervliet was eighth was 20.

Hopkins was runner-up in the girls meet with 90 points, and Marcellus was third with 51. Hartford finished fifth with 32, Bangor was sixth with 27 and Coloma was ninth with nine.

Dortch was key in two other Berrien Springs wins. She helped the Shamrocks win the 1,600 relay and the 800 relay alongside her sister Hilary.

“The only thing I was nervous about was the (1600) because that really isn’t my thing,” Dortch said. “But I knew I had to do this for the team to help us get first, and that is what I did.”

Zariya Suggs was another key contributor for the Shamrocks. She helped win four events, including the high and long jumps.

Narpreet Signh and Diamond Tyson took first in the discus, combining for a toss of 159 feet.

On the boys side, Berrien Springs counted on its depth to overcome adversity. A couple of mishaps passing the baton disqualified the Shamrocks in the 400 and 800 relays.

“This is our second event of the year. We came out with some nerves, but we have enough depth to make up for those things,” Rodriguez said.

Senior Sam Spaulding’s experience gave a major boost. He helped win three events, including the high jump, long jump and the Panther relay.

Spaulding and Anthony Latin won the long jump with a combined jump of 38-feet-11. They also won the high jump with a combined 12-0 jump, and Spaulding helped the Shamrocks to a time of 2:03.54 in the Panther relay.

“Our coaches do really well getting us ready and working on our craft,” Spaulding said. “We got some good results. Our eyes are focused on the big one (state). We want the best teams and competition.

“We want a lot of people watching us and we are working as hard as we can so we don’t fall short and end up on top.”

“He’s a senior and we rely on him,” Rodriguez said. “We’ve got Evan Griffiths, too, and they are great to rely on.”

Rodriguez likes what he is seeing, and hopes that the Shamrocks’ success will continue.

“We are healthy and we got to stay healthy for May,” he said. “We head to a big meet on Friday (the Allegan Invitational), and that will test us to see where we are at.”

Three records were set Friday. In addition to the Shamrocks’ 400 relay record, Hopkins girls set two records in the middle distance and pole vault.

The Vikings set a time of 7:29.24, clearing the 1989 record of 7:34 set by Edwardsburg. And they vaulted 15 feet to erase Coloma’s record of 14-3 set in 2016.
