WATERVLIET – The Brandywine volleyball team came into Saturday’s Watervliet Invitational with hopes of winning it all.

The mission was accomplished as the Bobcats defeated South Haven 15-25, 25-23, 15-13 in the tournament final.

“We had to make adjustments,” Brandywine coach Ray Prestley said. “Our outside hitter rolled an ankle this morning so we had to make big adjustments and come back into ourselves as a team. Our girls stepped up.

“It wasn’t always pretty but they followed the process and got the results that they wanted.”

The Rams played inspired in the first set of the final but the Bobcats rallied to take control of the last two sets. Yazmine Hall had four kills and four blocks to lead the Rams and Ella O’Sullivan tallied six kills, while Haley Hutto added five digs.

“I’m proud of our girls for being resilient,” South Haven coach Megan Washegesic said. “We tend to dig ourselves into a hole a lot and then we have to claw our way out. Before this week, we would just roll over. I’m excited to see them start to grow and figure out that they can crawl our way back.

“We came out fired up because we knew they were the team to beat here. We came out as the underdogs and we believed ourselves in the first set. When our middles get fired up and get some good blocks it really fires up the team. We had a shaky second and third set.”

For Prestley and his Bobcats, conditioning was the key to success in Saturday’s tournament.

“It’s about what we do in practice. Are we giving 100 percent? Are we giving it all for teammates? Do we still have something left in the tank? We’ll practice for two and a half hours and then we’ll do 15 minutes of conditioning.

“If you’re not going to push yourself in conditioning then you won’t be able to win the championship match.”

Brandywine defeated Bridgman in three sets in the semifinals to reach the finals and South Haven defeated Paw Paw in three sets to reach the finals. Haley Goff had 11 aces, 45 kills, 41 assists, and 35 digs to lead the Bees.

Michigan Lutheran fell to Decatur in three sets in the consolation final after beating rival Lake Michigan Catholic in three sets in the consolation semifinal.
