HOLLAND — Coloma came a long way to reach its first ever Division 3 girls soccer regional.
But despite playing some tough teams, the Comets couldn’t match the physical play and constant pressure by Allegan, falling 7-1 in a regional semifinal at Van Andel Stadium at Hope College on Tuesday.
“Our girls aren’t used to this type of physical play,” Coloma coach Rick Redman said. “But it is the way it is and the girls didn’t give up. For their first time here I’m really excited for them.”
Coloma (18-3-1) fell behind early when Kaitlynn Fulton scored off cross from Tayler Jackson just inside the keeper’s box in the 12th minute of the game. For the rest of the half the Comets found themselves clearing the ball down field as the Tigers (18-2-1) continued to attack.
Alison Radke added a second goal for Allegan four seconds before halftime, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Fulton scored the second of her three goals just 11 seconds into the second half.
Radke followed her 3 1/2 minutes later for her second goal of the evening for a 4-0 lead.
Emma VanderMolen managed to shake loose from a scramble deep into Allegan’s end, scoring the only Comet goal and cutting the deficit to 6-1.
Improvement has been a constant theme for Coloma this season. The Comets lost for only third time this season, and have improved against a number of competitors such has Kalamazoo Christian, losing 6-1 instead of by mercy rule as was the case in previous seasons.
“It is the simple things you look for as a positive for your season, and we’ve gotten that,” Redman said. “I can’t complain about our kids giving us that.
“We only lose two seniors (Grace Gagliardo and Mackenzie Ecker), all the freshmen are going to get better over time. That’s all you can ask for.”
