Wildlife Safari with Nelson the Animal Guy: Feb. 23. Get close and personal with a variety of exotic creatures. Among the possible guests are an alligator, African serval, kangaroo, toucan, barn owl, fennic fox, tarantula, sugar glider, Siberian lynx, African spring haas and more. Fernwood Botanical Gardens
Edible horticulture: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 23. In partnership with Edible Michiana magazine, join Fernwood for presentations on foraging wild mushrooms from a state certified expert, grocery store botany, heirloom tomatoes, deciphering food labels, and baking with vanilla. Multiple local businesses will be on hand to showcase their knowledge, products and services. Lunch is provided. Cost is $60, $48 for members.
Harbor Country Hikers
Nature detective lessons: 1 p.m. Feb. 17, Jens Jenson Preserve, Sawyer. Chikaming Open Lands’ Education and Outreach Coordinator Casey Struecker will lead a 1.5-mile easy wilderness forensic hike. Participants will learn where and what to look for to spot the animal signs that give clues left behind by the wildlife that live in the area’s woods, fields and wetlands. Jens Jensen Preserve is located at 6851 Parkway Dr., which is just north of Sawyer Highlands Church on Red Arrow Highway.
