Writer Dave Mull poses with one of eight steelhead landed with Capt. Kevin Ouzts last week on the Kalamazoo River.

One of the finest rites of fall is spending some time on a Southwest Michigan river fishing for steelhead. If you’re hosted by a guy who really knows how to catch them, it gets even better.

Capt. Kevin Ouzts (rhymes with “boots”) of Lawrence is one of those guys who really knows how to catch them. He’s a student of all things salmon, steelhead and trout, fishing the area rivers for steelhead when they show up in early fall until they leave in spring. Summers, he trolls the big lake. He even uses spring break from his job as a school system social worker to troll inland lakes for stocked trout. Although he also fishes for Lake Michigan perch, he has a special affinity for the cold-water species.
