Heath Mcvicar Atwell shows a keeper walleye he caught from shore before a kayak fishing trip started Thursday on the upper Muskegon River.

“Hey Luis, get me my net please,” said Heath Mcvicar Atwell calmly as he stood next to the Muskegon River launch ramp, playing a keeper walleye to shore. Luis Ibanez handed the landing net to Heath and the gold fish was soon landed.

Four of us had met before sunup Thursday at Heath’s invitation to try and catch smallmouth bass and walleyes from our kayaks. The ramp is right underneath US 131 and traffic roared at 75 mph overhead.
