Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs was named Rookie of the Year on the Fishing League Worldwide Tour.
Nelson finished ninth out of 170 competitors in the FLW tour point standings, and his performance was tops among 34 rookies.
Nelson got off to a slow start. He finished 120th at the season-opening event at the Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas after not catching a fish on the first day. His results got better as the season went on, highlighted by a third-place finish at Lake Chickamauga in Tennessee.
Nelson received a trophy and a Polaris Sportsman 570 ATV for his accomplishment. He will also be one of 52 competitors in the Forest Wood Cup in Hot Springs, Ark. on Aug. 9-11.
“The goal was to have a shot at Rookie of the Year and be consistent,” Nelson said in a press release. “The way I started off the season I thought I might not make the Cup. But you’ve just got to be consistent and keep your chin up, and where the chips fall are where they fall.”
Nelson has previously competed in the Costa FLW Series Northern Division.
