Jesse Boven of Kalamazoo shows a pheasant to Gracie at Rolling Hills Hunting Preserve near Marcellus.

The rooster pheasant launched out of the clump of tall grass cackling and loudly flapping. Its initial, nearly vertical trajectory barely started to flatten out to escape us two men and the black dog when a single shot from my 28-gauge shotgun brought it back to the snow-covered ground.

The only one of the three hunters not impressed by this fast action that happened mere minutes after we started walking the field was the slim Labrador retriever, Gracie – and she was the main reason we were on the Rolling Hills Hunting Preserve on Wednesday morning.
