BENTON HARBOR — Bridgman's Mikaela Owen won one of the most exciting races at Friday's 62nd Annual Rotary Track Meet, holding off St. Joseph's Jillian Tunnicliff in the 400-meter run.

Owen also won two of the least exciting races, leaving the field behind as she easily claimed the 100 and 200 for the third straight year at the event.

"I love coming to this meet," Owen said. "It's great competition. I just run my heart out every single time."

Owen finished the 400 in 59.82, just ahead of Tunnicliff's 59.92. Tunnicliff made a late move and was nearly even with Owen, but couldn't quite complete the comeback.

"I've actually run with (Tunnicliff) before in indoor (track)," Owen said. "She's a great athlete. I knew coming into this it was going to be really close between us. On the straightaway, I didn't know where she was. I saw her out of the corner of my eye and I was like 'I've got to go, I've got to go!'"

"That was super exciting," St. Joseph coach Mike Mahler said. "The only thing I haven't worked on with Jillian is leaning at the end."

Owen's times of 12.66 in the 100 and 26.64 in the 200 were easily ahead of the competition. She finished second in the 100 and fifth in the 200 in last year's Division 4 state finals, and has hopes of more success at state.

Owen was also second in the long jump at 15-1 1/2, losing out to another standout performer, St. Joseph's Lynea Slayback, who jumped 16-7.

"Mikaela's had a great year so far," Bridgman coach John Carr said. "I don't think she was planning to run the 400 when she came in, or long jumping, but she was willing to try it and she's become very successful. It's been a pleasure coaching her. She's a very gracious competitor."

Slayback also ran on the Bears' first-place 800 relay team, but was at her best in the hurdles, easily winning both events.

"I love hurdles," Slayback said. "I was introduced to it in 7th grade. I just love running and jumping, I was an Irish dancer. Just the competition, it makes me work hard. I really like the challenge."

Though St. Joseph is in Division 1 this season and will face a tough regional, Mahler thinks Slayback has a chance to reach the state finals in the hurdle events.

"Our regional is going to be extremely tough," Mahler said. "Looking at our regional times, I think she's third in the 100 hurdles, tied for second in the 300 hurdles. We're going to have to continue to improve and lower our times in those events, but she's got a chance to qualify.

"I just wish we had another one (of her). It seems like anything we put her in, she does a good job. She's just an extremely hard worker, very team-oriented as well."

The Bear girls won all three relays in Friday's meet, using a variety of runners. Brooke Russell ran on all three, and Tunnicliff was on the 800 and 1600 teams. Russell was also third in the long jump.

"We really wanted to focus on our relays today," Mahler said. "We're just looking at the regional to see how we can get the most girls to the state finals.

"Brooke Russell is just an outstanding leader for our team. She ran all three of our relays, just to help anchor and solidify those relays."

On the boys side, St. Joseph's Casey Miller, who won the long jump at 20-5, and came from behind to beat Bridgman's Jayden Pribyl in the 300 hurdles.

Lakeshore's Jakobe Young won the 200 in 22.97 and also ran on the winning 400 relay team.

Dowagiac's Shawn Little was a distance standout, winning both the 1600 and 3200.

This year's winners of $2,000 Rotary scholarships were Kelsey Oberer and Nolan Rich of St. Joseph, Jessie Rieth of River Valley and Sami Weaver of Lakeshore.
