St. Joseph ran into a dominant pitcher in Saturday’s Division 1 softball regional semifinals.
Howell junior Molly Carney, who has committed to play at Notre Dame, struck out 16 Bears to lead her team to a 4-0 victory. Carney then tossed a second shutout as Howell won the regional with a 1-0 victory over Gull Lake.
Ellie Haunhorst and Courtney Farrish had the only two hits on the day for St. Joseph (23-8). Isabella Rothrock did the pitching for the Bears, striking out five in six innings.
St. Joseph rarely had such struggles at the plate during a successful season. The Bears won their first-ever Division 1 district championship, as well as the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference West Division title. They hit 54 home runs as a team, including 18 by Farrish.

St. Joseph’s Ryan Guzzo shot an 84 at the Division 2 state finals on Saturday. The sophomore finished with a two-day total of 162.
Dowagiac finished 15th as a team in Division 3 with an overall score of 756. The Chieftains shot 380 on Saturday. Drew Davis and Dylan Elmore each shot a team-best 91 in the second round. Davis finished with a score of 180, followed by Drew Phillips (188), Elmore (192) and Matt Mosier (196).
Lake Michigan Catholic was 16th in Division 4. The Lancers showed improvement Saturday with a 379 to finish with a total of 781.
Charles LaSata carded an 89 on Saturday and a 181 overall, both team bests. Other golfers included Will Latham (184), Connor Casey (201) and Connor Shooks (215).
